View Melville in the 1940's

The history is long for Newport, starting in the 1700’s. There was even a plant that processed sugar from Jamaica into rum, sent the rum to Africa which was an aid to gathering slaves to take to Jamaica.

Melville was a training ground for PT Boats. John F. Kennedy and Leonard J. Thom trained together here and became good friends. Their lives would be intertwined for the next 3 years. In March of 1943 Ensign Leonard J. Thom, U.S.N.R., was sent to the South Pacific Theater and the Solomon Islands. When he drew his assignment as Executive Officer (XO) of PT 109, he was pleased to learn that it's new commander was his old friend, Jack Kennedy.  SOURCE
