place of the Original
Neosho Class Super Tanker. The actual construction was accomplished at
Fore
River Shipyard, commissioning was carried out in the Boston Naval Yard.
In 1960
the yard included a marine railway, four graving docks, two shipways,

buildings, and 21 miles of railroad track leading to 24 piers. By the
early
1970s the Navy considered the yard too small and too expensive to
operate. It
was officially disestablished 1 July 1974 and transferred to the National
Park Service. The
United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum and USS Salem are located
at the former Fore River Shipyard.

Maritime
Administration will auction off the Fore River Ship Yard, a
130-acre,
long troubled ship building facility located here and in the
neighboring town of Braintree. The federal agency hopes to recoup about
$72 million in government-backed loans made to Massachusetts Heavy
Industries, the previous owner whose bankruptcy left the sprawling
property in the Maritime Administration's hands.
